The UK’s top police officer investigating vehicle crime is encouraging drivers to take steps to keep their car safe amid a rise in criminals exploiting keyless technology.

Provisional figures from the National Police Chiefs’ Council show a 3.1% increase between May 2021 and June 2021 in vehicle crime. The bulk of this increase is from keyless theft.

Intelligence shows organised crime gangs are using relay technology to receive the signal from a key inside a house and transfer it to a portable device, allowing them to unlock and drive the car.

Merseyside Police produced this excellent video which for one minute of your time is a must watch to show how criminals can steal a car in just 30 seconds and what you can do to protect against keyless car theft.

Tips for keyless car owners include:

  • Investing in a Faraday Bag/signal blocking case for keys. They block the signal from the fob, are relatively inexpensive – costing as little as around £5 - and are widely available online.
  • Contact your dealer and check if your vehicle has any outstanding software updates, which may improve security
  • Check if the keyless fob can be turned off/on, your dealer can confirm and advise how to do this
  • Be vigilant, and report any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood to the police
